Courage, Charm and Character Presented by Martha Hartzog

Join AWFC members for the January luncheon and presentation by Austin author Martha Ann Hartzog on her new book, “Courage, Charm, and Character” which tells the story of the First Ladies of Texas from 1836 to the present. The book features the collection of historic gowns representing these First Ladies, which is housed and exhibited at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Lavishly illustrated with color photos and historic black and whites, the book is both a history of Texas and a fashion book! It also includes sections on the two woman governors of Texas and notable women with ties to Texas such as Mamie Eisenhower and Barbara Bush.

“Courage, Charm and Character” was part of a project of the Texas Society Daughters of the American Revolution, under the then State Regent, Judy Callaway Ostler. Mrs. Ostler’s project was designed to raise funds for the conservation and preservation of the historic gown collection of Texas First Ladies, which had been originally created by the Texas Society, DAR, in 1938. Proceeds from the sale of the book, along with other activities of the project, are designated for the continued support of the collection. The cost of the book is $54.13, which includes tax. Checks or cash are accepted.
